W House

Devon

A large, new family house overlooking a village in South Devon, with views out over a river estuary to the sea.

To capture these views, the main living areas are on the first floor where extensive balconies link to the walled gardens below with an external staircase. Outside the walled gardens, there is a perimeter area of more naturalistic planting to capture the field-like character of the original site.

With the exception of the main en-suite bedroom, which is also at first floor level, the four other bedrooms are located at ground floor level, each looking out onto a different area of the garden. The ground floor also accommodates two bathrooms, a separate WC,  a large utility room and a second study.

Cars are deliberately kept away from the house in a lightweight steel and hardwood structure at the southern entrance to the site.

The house incorporates solar water heating, passive solar gain principles and rainwater recycling.
